The American Avocet

Description

I grabbed my camera and went west to the wet-lands of the Great Salt Lake. I'm always impressed by the scale of life this habitat can support. What seems like stinky barren wasteland is a critical habitat for hundreds of thousands of birds. Some just visitors passing through along their annual migration; others, hearty year round residents.

One of my favorites species this time of year is the American Avocet. They are beautiful little birds. They use that long slender beak to comb through muck to find the staple of their diet, small invertibrates. Don't be fooled by their delicate appearance, these guys have an attitude. I watched what I believe to be a nesting couple actively harrass a bird at least 10 times their size, I believe it was some species of Egret. It worked. The massive bird was on its way out of their small patch of water as soon as it entered.
