Sun-Dial Peak by tourofnature Sun-Dial Peak by tourofnature
Sun-Dial peak in the upper Wasatch mountains, Utah.

This is a hike I've been wanting to do for awhile, and today I got off early from work and went for it.

I either seriously overestimated my physical prowess, or underestimated the difficulty of this hike because by the time I reached the lake, I was happy to be alive. I thought about turning back more than once, but the peak in the distance kept me going. Finally I arrived and shot as I nervously watched the sky change in front of me as the clouds began to look more and more ominous.

After what I thought was a great shoot I started to head down. Not more than 5 minutes from leaving the top I heard a ground shaking thunder sweep down the valley. I've been in high alpine lightning storms and I wasn't the least bit pleased to be in another one. After I saw a flash of lighting it occurred to me I had an aluminum tripod sticking out the back of my pack. "Aluminum is an excellent electricity conductor" was the recurring thought in my mind as lighting seemed to strike all around me and rain drenched everything. 7 miles later, after a hair raising run/jog/scramble down, I finally arrived at my car strangely thankful to be alive. I dunno, I've seen lightning strike close and the stuff scares the hell out of me.

That was my Wednesday adventure, and this shot represents the fruits of my labor.

Canon 5D. 24-105mm. HDR. Circ pol.

Opinions welcomed. :D

Beautiful scenery! Exciting story! I love the looks of country like this though I doubt if I could manage to climb to it... not in one day anyway. :) Glad you made that 7 mile run OK, good thing it was downhill!

Haha, you could make it, and the good thing for me is the trip was about 7 miles round trip so the scared dash down was only about 3/half miles. :D I'm glad you took the time to read the story. :)

I like to read the story with the picture, if there is one. It adds an additional dimension to my perception of the picture. You have a way with words that is as pleasing as your photography. :D

Yeah that is one reason why I am scared to go shooting in the rain for lightning shots considering it can strike up to 10 miles away from the storm lol I may have to seriously considering getting one of those GorillaPods or something. This is utterly fantastic though and I would say it may have been worth the time it took ya to get this! Utterly stunning work!

Haha, yep, I don't mess around in those storms. I've seen it strike too close. Thanks for the comments John.

Great shot, these shots are always more self pleasing when you've wore yourself out to get there :D Awesome scenery, so did you get to the high peak in the distance? Any shots to come from the top if so? :)

Beautiful  Looks really rugged :) And i don't blame you for being freaked out by a thunderstorm (beautiful as they look)-they're horrid things, particularly to a brontophobe like me :|

Brontophobe the general term for fear of thunderstorms  I think it's astraphobe or something for lightening, but whatever, i'm quite freaked out by both :P

yeah i've never been caught outside in a lightning storm, but it has come extremely close to the house. New england has been getting destroyed by heavy rains lately, and there have been a few close calls.

frankly, it scares me to, so your not alone...

Beautiful scenery! I do wish the center sky was not blown out, but I know it can be very difficult to get everything working together when you have a lot of contrast of colors in a scene. Overall, nicely done!

I am happy to hear that your trip was safe, even if it was tiring. :)

Thanks, that spot bugged me too, I tried to dodge it a bit but it just turned the area grey, I think the information is lost.

A little exercise never hurt anyone right?? It was well worth it, I appreciate the feedback. :D

Ya, once the information is gone, it only gets uglier if you try to do anything with it. Usually I will take several photos to make sure everything it metered, then if necessary I can merge them, or just use one and adjust the levels for the darker areas.

Sometimes my body tries to tell me that I am allergic to exercise :D

Excellent capture. I'm glad you were not struck by lightning, heh. That would have been unfortunate. All told I think it's a photo well worth the endeavor to get it. :)

Getting stuck by lighting is a bit unfortunate I believe. lol

I'd agree all worth it, it was quite a beautiful hike and destination that turned into a great memory.

:eyepopping: I've never given much thought to the tripod/lightening connection before...now that I live where there are lightening storms (very rare in southern California on the beach-quite common in the Sierra Nevada foothills :D) I'd better keep that in mind!

This photo is so beautiful - picture postcard perfect! And I mean that as a compliment

haha, yeah, I wish I hadn't made the connection because I probably wouldn't have ran/jogged the miles to my car if I hadn't. Storms create the best images tho!

Thanks a lot for the compliment. :D
