This was a very difficult exposure for me as one might expect when shooting directly into a setting sun. I used a 3HS GND filter to try and balance the bright sky and it wasn't close to bringing the exposure together. I ended up using the photo with the GND and still needed a manual blend with a bracketed photo. This is about a 5 stop range from the sky to the foreground. These are the exact situations that reverse GND filters would apply. The colors were very bright during the sunset and I needed to de-saturate the blue quite a bit to make it look more realistic.
While I was shooting up on this knoll there were two Bull Elk bugling a couple of hundred yards to my left. It was an amazing experience.
Canon 5D. 24-105 L. 3HS GND filter. Blended exposures.
Beautiful! I love sunset shots. I wonder if the effect would have been more dramatic if you had positioned the camera at a horizontal instead of vertical.
I did shoot quite a few in horizontal but the foreground was more dynamic with the vert. Do you remember this sunset? You and Dave were shooting those elk I mentioned down below.
It seemed to me the horizontal would have been more dramatic for the sky.... either way it was a fantastic sunset. I remember it distinctly!! I had a telephoto lens on my camera at the time and was kicking myself in the but for not remaining at Sprague Lake for more pics... the reflection of that susnset light on the lake would have been fantastic.
