Island Lake

Description

The sheer size of these granite peaks cutting across the sky at the top on the Windriver Mountain Range is unlike anything I've seen before. Gannet Peak, at 13,908 ft, is the highest elevation point in my home state of Wyoming and the peak sits just behind the skyline seen in the distance. On the other side of these peaks lies the largest glacier in the Rocky Mountains inside of the US. The glacier is estimated to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 800 acres, enormous for this far south.

Incredibly beautiful and equally rugged country, many mountaineers consider Gannet Peak to be the most challenging state high point in the US second only to Alaska's 20,320 foot Denali. On our July 4th trip, we spent 4 days backpacking in the area which proved to be challenging and very rewarding, although we stayed well below the peaks. My brother's and I are planning on a trip to climb the peak next summer so hopefully next year by this time I'll have images from the top!

This image shows the view above Island Lake, approaching the Titcomb Basin, Wyoming.

I love finding new photographers (new to me anyway) who really know how to capture nature's beauty :)
