I had been hiking all day in dark, rainy skies. With this weather I expected either a dramatic, unique light show at sunset, or a gray colorless evening. Fortunately it was the former.

As far as finding this comp, I was driving through the Islands in the Sky District in Canyonlands NP basically following the light. After breaking a few speed limits, I saw this scene line up below the small patch of sky that looked promising for some nice light and color. I pulled over on the side of the road and scrambled to the cliff's edge for this spectacular view.

Suggester said; "This image here represents the southwest at it's finest. A rugged canyon bathed in dramatic light. The tones are well balanced and one of the more impressive aspects of the whole shot are the shadows of the buttes in the background. Being from the southwest, a light show such as this does not occur as often as one might expect. And the photographer took advantage of being at the right place at the right time ethic in photography."
